Do you like working at your desk? Work doesn’t have to take place while sitting in front of your screen, in a long meeting or on a conference call. It doesn’t necessarily happen while selling to a customer or in the office either.

Follow these three strategies, and you’ll feel happier and more productive even when the pressure is on at work.

1. Walk For At Least Fifteen Minutes A Day

Former Apple CEO Steve Jobs was a prolific walker. He often invited colleagues and business partners on long walks around the Silicon Valley neighborhood area where he lived.

Jobs believed fresh air and exercise stimulates creative thinking. Science is on his side. Research from Stanford University suggests walking substantially improves creative thinking.

It enables leaders to approach a problem from a different angle, whereas sitting in a boardroom thrashing out a problem is less effective.

Perhaps you and your colleagues could set up a walking team meeting. If it helps, bring a notepad or a dictaphone so you can capture ideas as they arise.

At the very least, exposure to sunshine stimulates the release of Vitamin D, which will encourage clearer thinking when you sit at your desk or get home that night.

2. Read Great Business Books

Some of the most successful entrepreneurs and CEOs set aside time each day for reading. These include Ray Dalio, Warren Buffett, Charlie Munger and Bill Gates.

If you want to succeed at work or help a business thrive, reading is part of your job. You must read often and deeply from disciplines outside of your comfort zone.

Subscribe to an audiobook service and listen to audiobooks during your commute. Rise half an hour earlier and set aside this time for deep reading and learning.

If you have more control over your calendar, set aside a small portion of each day for reading. If it helps, prepare your reading materials in advance. I felt strange the first time I stopped work in the middle of the day to read a research paper.

I quickly found setting aside just 15 minutes each day after lunch enabled me to read more business publications than waiting until evening when I felt tired and likely to put off learning. This, in turn, exposed me to thinking from different industries that I was unlikely to find while at work.

3. Meditate On Your Work

Meditation is becoming increasingly popular in Silicon Valley. Successful business leaders who cite the benefits of meditation include HuffPost founder Arianna Huffington, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey and LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner.

Huffington told High Existence:

I wish I’d appreciated just how powerful it can be to introduce just five minutes of meditation to your day … even just a few minutes will open the door to creating a new habit—and all the many proven benefits it brings.”

Meditation should enable you to step back from problems at work or in your business and see them for what they are.

To experience the benefits of meditation, you need to meditate for only about an hour a week. That works out to about 10 minutes of the day. Some of the more popular meditation apps that can help include Headspace, Waking Up and Calm.

Meditation can also lead to an improved mood. An improvement in your mood will enable you overcome challenges in your work faster. Even if you don’t solve a problem immediately, you’ll have the mental tools to work through it.
