The mainstream nine-to-five work-life balance was ingrained in the minds of millennials following years of watching their parents drift through 50 years of the corporate grind. Unlike their parents however, millennials consistently emphasize work-life balance, with more emphasis on ‘life’, seeking to be their own bosses and are gravitating towards freelancing, contractor work, and entrepreneurial careers.
The affinity for people to free themselves from the nine-to-five grind is not strictly confined to millennials either, although they are the primary drivers of the trend. According to MetLife’s Annual Employee Benefit Trend Study, 57% of workers say they are interested in freelancing, with 77% of millennials interested in freelancing work rather than full-time work, noticeably higher than Generation X (57%) and Baby Boomer (43%) interest.
Additionally, 52% of employees view a healthy work-life balance as crucial to their success and ability to thrive in the workplace, only trailing hard work as the most popularly referenced key to success. As the economy transitions to a majority of contract workers rather than full-time employees, evaluating opportunities to free yourself from the nine-to-five grind can present both arduous challenges and fruitful opportunities.
Shifting Career Paths Can Be Challenging But Opportunities Await
The comforts afforded by full-time employment revolve around stability. From the regular paychecks and familiarity with your position, to following the career path you studied to obtain, it all amounts to a safe path that most people choose to stay on. Deciding to forgo the normality of every day and initiate a change in your career can be a startling proposition.
Transitioning to a new role through contract work or freelancing does not have to be reactionary, however. Many successful entrepreneurs and contractors start small, working on projects in their spare time before deciding to make the full transition to a different work style. Similarly, skills can transfer ideally to projects that amplify your talents, sometimes even pushing abilities to the forefront that you never realized you had.
“One of the most critical factors in business is your mindset. Be obsessed with creating value. The money always comes when you’re not searching for it, so instead focus on impact and making a difference,” says Kevin David, a successful entrepreneur and YouTuber. David encourages people to become financially free by thinking outside the traditional model of trading one hour of time for “X” dollars.
There are a remarkable number of ways to earn a living outside of the typical employer/employee work settings. Properly researching these opportunities and extending your skills by continually learning are essential factors in driving an alternative career. Online resources for learning new information and crafts have never been more abundant. Simply striving to enhance your knowledge by leveraging such resources can do wonders for your entrepreneurial path.
Overcome Challenges To Achieve Financial Freedom
David is best known for helping countless people take back control of their lives and liberate themselves from the nine-to-five grind. He recommends spending your time building scalable automated systems that earn you money while you’re backpacking through Europe, or fast asleep. Originally a digital nomad, making iPhone Apps, and travel blogs, David graduated from Oregon State and began his career working as an accountant for PriceWaterhouseCoopers.
He quickly realized however that working constant overtime for someone else was not the career path he was seeking, and subsequently transitioned to a privacy consultant role at Facebook. Initially a dream job, David eventually began exploring other opportunities for online income, knowing that working for someone else was not his destiny.
“I went to college the ‘way I was supposed to’ and I got the job ‘I was supposed to’ and yet I was miserable. I lived paycheck to paycheck, endured long hours (the best hours of the day) practically handcuffed to a desk in a stuffy cubicle crunching numbers all day as an accountant. And if that wasn’t bad enough, the corporate inefficiencies and inertia were sickening. I knew I had to break free. This wasn’t what life was supposed to be. So I made a fateful choice and took action to take control of my life and finances and left that job and began training with the very best of the best,” David recalls.
He stumbled upon Amazon FBA while working late hours at Facebook, and launched his first Amazon product a short time later. Since then, David has been able to free himself from the typical nine-to-five workday allowing him to spend time traveling the world, and growing an online community of more than 325,000 followers on his YouTube channel.
David channeled his love of teaching, with what he had learned building a successful e-commerce business, and now offers a suite of online training courses teaching Amazon FBA, Shopify, and Facebook Advertising.
Amazon FBA has led to numerous success stories and confers unique opportunities for people looking to either supplement their current income or shift towards a more product-focused and online marketing career.
The global e-commerce market is huge. According to a recent report, business-to-consumer e-commerce was valued at roughly $2.7 trillion in 2016 and is expected to accelerate as the online economy continues to gain steam. Leveraging the outsized e-commerce market is clearly an opportunity worth researching for freelancers, entrepreneurs, and full-time employees alike.
Shifting career paths and launching a business is not an easy feat, but can be attained with dedication and understanding the right tools to achieve your goal. David shares three simple steps that helped him achieve his goals and can help you achieve online financial success in 2019:
- Leverage experts with proven results.
Learning from experts can help jumpstart your path and guide your results by understanding the genius and mistakes made by experienced people in the field.
- Implement a proven system.
Entrepreneurs must address problems and pain points and create solutions. Use a proven system as the framework for your own business, and keep innovating and testing as you go.
- Provide massive value upfront.
Use what you have created to help others achieve their dreams too. This is quickly becoming the modern way of paying-it-forward in our fast-paced digital world. Build a real relationship with your audience. You can add value upfront by providing free trainings, podcasts, and online courses. Remember, one of the best ways to be an effective business mentor is by adding constant value without expecting anything in return. The most noticeable mistake that people starting out make is charging for value, instead of adding value for free to make an impact.
