Many exciting innovations in technology were released in 2018, from new applications of artificial technology and blockchain to new iterations of wearable tech. Learning to integrate new tech and creating updated best practices is crucial for business owners looking to stay one step ahead. And of course, having the latest tech gadgets can enhance personal time, too.
To help you choose the right tech for your company—or yourself—eight members of Young Entrepreneur Council talk about the gadget or application they can’t live without for their life or business.
1. Power Banks
Power banks, which are portable chargers for your electronic devices, have “saved my life” numerous times. With power banks you no longer have to worry about your devices dying and not being near an outlet to charge them. You can work from anywhere without having to be afraid of losing power. I like how many power banks offer a dual output design too, so that you can charge more than one device at a time. – John Turner, SeedProd LLC
I’ll be honest: When the concept of wireless earbuds was first being discussed, I was extremely skeptical. I thought they would have poor audio quality, be far too fragile and get lost easily. However, Apple’s AirPods made me a believer. I no longer have to awkwardly cradle my phone in between my shoulder and neck when talking with a client while typing. I can wear them when I do chores around the house or exercise without having to worry about the cables getting tangled or wet. Best of all, I can charge them and keep them stored safely with the included clamshell housing. These earbuds are just one of those things that I can’t live without, and I have no idea how I’ve lived without them before! – Bryce Welker, CPA Exam Guy
3. Uber Eats
From Apple AirPods to smart home devices, there is a plethora of new and cutting-edge gadgets that help make personal and professional lives easier. For me, I can’t live without Uber Eats. Uber Eats is a delivery branch of Uber, the car service. Instead of delivering people, however, Uber Eats delivers food. Essentially, Uber Eats partners with restaurants and lets them decide what from their menu they want to sell on the Uber Eats app. Uber Eats now has over 100,000 restaurant partnerships, ranging from McDonald’s to more upscale eateries. I use Uber Eats at work, for business lunches and even at home after a long day. It’s an easy way to manage food delivery for employees, it offers straightforward billing and it has enough variety to please even the pickiest eater in the office. – Shu Saito, Godai Soaps
4. reMarkable Tablet
I like using paper planners, but I hate trying to keep paper planners synchronized with my other productivity tools. I recently found a tool that gives me the experience of writing on a paper planner while automatically generating PDFs of my notes and translating my handwriting into usable text. The reMarkable Tablet is an e-ink device with a stylus that feels like a respectable writing instrument. I can sketch, mind-map and do a lot more than just write on it. This tablet eliminated multiple steps from my workflow, and I love it. – Thursday Bram, The Responsible Communication Style Guide
Smartwatches have made life so much easier. Their applications are varied, from keeping track of health and fitness to reading messages while on the go. 2018 has seen the addition of call functionality to these devices. Throw wireless earphones in the mix and you are free from the hassle of carrying your phone around while enjoying wireless connectivity, even when taking calls. This is one gadget that has become an essential element of everyday life and truthfully is something I simply cannot live without. – Rahul Varshneya, Arkenea
6. Tile Pro Tracker
Tile Pro trackers are awesome because I never have to worry about losing my keys again. You attach a Tile Pro tracker to anything small that you regularly misplace, like your keys, and when you can’t find them, as long as you’re in Bluetooth range your lost item will play a loud tone to help you find it. And if you lose your phone you can tap on the Tile Pro button and your phone will ring, even if you had it on silent. – Blair Williams, MemberPress
7. Mobile Home Cameras And Security
One of the biggest advancements for myself and running my business is having the ability to always monitor what’s going on in my home. Thanks to mobile applications and devices like Ring, I can click a button and see what my dog is up to while I’m not at home. The same goes for answering the door when I’m not at home or in the area. It’s also great for turning on the lights when I forget to flick them on before I leave. All in all, this has been a nice game-changer for connectivity on the go and making our lives easier. – Zac Johnson, Blogger
8. TurboScan And eSignAnyWhere
The digital age has brought about many innovations for my life and business that always have me asking, “How did I get by before this was invented?!” The technologies that have most affected my business and made things super efficient for me are my TurboScan app and my eSignAnyWhere app. These two apps give me the ability to electronically sign documents and create and send PDF documents on the fly. Whether I have meetings outside the office or I’m on vacation away from New York, being able to manage and execute documents from my mobile phone is crucial to my business. Another great benefit to these apps and this type of technology in general is that we were able to cut a good amount of overhead that used to be allotted to reams of paper and expensive printer ink. – Jared Weitz, United Capital Source Inc.
