To be perfectly honest, I have no idea how to measure if a blog post is 10x better. What makes a one blog post 10 times better than another? I don’t know. Reads? Likes? Shares? Probably all of the above.
Instead, you want to create a post that when your reader gets done reading it they say “Wow, that was really good.”
I asked Greg Digneo to give me an example of how he 10x his blog posts.
Step 1: Audit the competition
One of the tools that the ideal customer at Time Doctor searches for is “online collaboration tools”.
Once he decided to write a blog post about online collaboration tools, the first thing he did was research the posts that were already ranking on the first page.
Just enter the name of the tools in the search bar and see what comes up below the ads.
For instance, for “Online Collaboration Tools” there were these entries:
As you can see, there are lists of 27 tools, 14 tools, 15, 7 tools, etc.
Now, he could have done what any newbie blogger would have done and wrote a post called “Top 10 Online Collaboration tools.” But getting a post that is basically exactly like the others will make it harder to rank first.
So, in order to make his content better, he did two things:
First, he made a list of 53 tools, almost double what was the previously highest list of the tool.
And second, he wrote a comprehensive review of each tool. It wa s well over 3,000 words!
Longer doesn’t necessarily mean better, but more comprehensive sure does.
And the end result? Online Collaboration Tools post ranks #1 in Google, driving well over 5,000 uniques per month for Greg ’ s client, Time Doctor.
• Like we talked about above, you can make the post more thorough. You can do this a few ways. Instead of creating a list of 10 tools, you can create a list of 101 tools. Or you can create a “how to” post that completely solves the person’s problem without them having to leave the post.
• You can use your own personal experience. Most posts on the internet are “me too” posts. They’re rehashes of what’s already been said and done before. However, if you add your own personal story, or your own data points, you’re post will stand out and become unique.
• Include multi-media. There’s no getting around the fact that video is here to stay. By including videos in your blog post, you’ll increase the value of the post and people will be more likely to share it.
Whenever I finish writing a blog post, I always send it to a few colleagues to get their opinion. If they don’t reply “this is awesome” or “wow, that was good”, then I know I need to spend more time making it better.
Now it’s your turn
Once you’ve found your blog post topic, simply enter it into Google’s search bar and take a look at what the competition is ranking for.
Now, determine how you can make your post even better.
By following these two steps, you’re sure to have an amazing blog post that your audience will love to read.
