Part One: A Bird’s Eye View To The Power of Corporate Health And Wellness

The world of work of the 21st century is changing at a rapid pace. The digital economy is in a constant mode of reinvention making it harder from both the C-level executives to the average employee to keep up with this constant momentum adding new pressures that make navigating this environment more strenuous. In an age where companies are re-valuating their mission and values one of the most crucial areas that need to be highlighted is the importance of corporate health and wellness as a key area for growth. Business is about people and if an organization cannot take care of their own, they will lose out on what is the true driver for long term success.

Corporate culture needs to embrace the ever-growing importance of mental health as a central role in a winning strategy. In the past there was a considerable stigma placed upon employees who were dealing with emotional or psychological issues.  Today, we are seeing a seismic shift both in our understanding of mental health but also how the workplace itself plays a sizable role in contributing to a myriad of issues ranging from stress, anxiety, depression to addiction. These types of invisible disabilities are becoming more prevalent in the work life of employees across numerous occupations. It is time that C-level executives, senior managers and team leaders become more fluent in the parlance of mental health and the effect it has on the business of everyday life.

To achieve this goal, these executives and senior managers ought to adopt a mindset where corporate coaching and psychotherapy are woven into the fabric of daily strategy and on par with other types of business tactics.  Finding a new strategy where the employer-employee relationship can be redefined, where a mutual commitment can be made to not only help transform careers for the long term, but the foundational health of a corporate culture.

One of the most effective strategies comes from the mind of LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman in his book The Alliance: managing talent in the networked age which was also co-authored by entrepreneurs Ben Casnocha and Chris Yeh. In this revolutionary book the authors lay out a new concept of talent management and how to implement a new way of business intelligence that relies heavily on relationship building which is so critical in developing a competitive advantage. Rather, than seeing employees as family or as free agents of the gig economy, the relationship should be predicated on the idea of an alliance which opens up a very honest and forthright dialogue with employees seeing the true inherent value on both sides but offers the ability to build a corporate culture that will be able to attract and retain individuals that an organization needs and is ready to adapt to the changing nature of the  digital economy. Bringing in the human centric element of coaching and psychotherapy creates an added element that provides an enormous boost to not only morale but developing a framework that embraces the value of the relationship and seeks to create not only a healthier more productive work environment but a healthier person that will engender mutual trust, mutual investment and most importantly mutual benefit for the success of an organization.

As we continue to expand the mission of a corporation we must look more closely at the power of corporate health and wellness as a cornerstone of this new strategy of talent management. To keep individuals prepared to thrive in a creative, flexible and fast paced business environment it is essential that new tools are provided to C-level executives and senior management to engage in this new workforce but also define new opportunities to provide continued growth.

In Part two of this column we will look more closely at key psychotherapeutic and coaching strategies that companies can utilize to deal with the daily issues that impact an employee’s work life. Incorporating The New Disability Narrative into this process only enhances an organizations competitive advantage to create new opportunities and develop real world solutions to complex problems.
