Awareness is the ability to recognize and understand personal moods, emotions and drives and their effects on others. Individuals with high awareness are able to channel their energy confidently so that successful results will happen. To impactfully connect, communicate and understand others there is an initial need to develop the level of awareness that allows us to be clear on our feelings, thinking process and judgments. We can not understand others to a higher standard than we understand ourselves. We can not connect with others to a higher level than we are connected within ourselves. We can not positively impact and influence others to higher levels than the level of development within ourselves of the trace, pattern or idea that we are trying to spread around. Leadership is built by self-awareness. It is by getting ready ourselves and chiseling our best version that we manage to radiate our influence around.

Closely following the awareness in the ladder of personal development we encounter willpower. It is not enough to come face to face with ourselves. Diagnosis often requires a quick response to remove, reconstruct or heal what does not work correctly. But changes in routines and patterns take a lot of effort, determination, endurance, time and self-promotion. Every time of the year is good to set up a new beginning understood as the voluntary start of a new phase but a new year represents the model of an ideal one when our hopes and wishes come together and make us feel optimistic and ready for all future good.

It is now the perfect time to charge your batteries, and take advantage of some useful tips to grow on self-awareness and set up your leadership goals for 2019!

1. Start by testing  your leadership levels

Get a new full picture of yourself and be open to embracing the novelties. Last year evaluation of your leadership traces is not applicable to the new year is now coming. You can make use and combine several tools to asset your current starting point and develop your leadership goals based on update radiography.

The DISC profile refers to the four behavior types assessed: Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, and Compliance. It is more focused on behaviors than preferences so it can be combined with the John Maxwell Leadership Assessment measuring individual attributes that help leaders to develop at different levels.  StrengthsFinder, focused on preferences and behaviors or the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) referring to four polarities (such as extroversion/introversion and thinking/feeling) are also good templates to use for a comprehensive personal evaluation.

2. Test your willpower strength

“It’s not that some people have the willpower and some don’t. It’s that some people are ready to change and others are not.” (James Gordon).

Willpower is a muscle that can just be measured in action and exercise by repetition of the healthy patterns that creates good habits. In case you would like to support your resolutions though, you can go through different easy tests that will give you good examples of simple everyday situations where your willpower can be strengthened.

3. Identify your role models for the upcoming year

A substantial number of studies have shown us that humans learn through modeling others. Positive role models boost people’s motivation by shaping a guide to achieving success in different areas. The ability to set up a clear set of values, to accept and inspire others, to commit to a cause or community or to overcome obstacles are powerfully reinforced the encouragement inspired by role models. Role models provide with the motivation and acknowledgment that we could do better.

Choosing the rights ones in alignment with your set up list of goals for 2019 will strengthen the sense of your fight and ease the path for achievement.  What guides the decisions you make and the type of person you want to be? What attributes do you need to fulfill these values? Who do you know (intimately or from a distance) who consistently demonstrates these attributes?

4. Choose two good habits you would like to develop and one bad habit you would want to eradicate.

The success of a productive year of personal development and leadership achieved milestones is crafted with some few, small but useful goals to boost good habits and get rid off unproductive vices. Once you have set your year goals, choose the two particular patterns that would help your aims to be achieved and work on a month-plan of action plans that will help you strengthen these two habits. Small, concrete actions will help you improve the quality and realism of your habits goal setting. Plan it likewise for one negative practical pattern that you would like to eliminate. Remember that positive goals should always double the efforts spent on the negative ones.

5. Pick out two strengths you would like to boost and one weakness you would want to ease.

While habits are settled tendencies or usual manners of behavior, strengths are those internal attributes and resources that support the successful achievement of outcomes and habit development. Make a list of these two strengths of you that will help you develop your 2019 choice of positive habits. Set goals and actions in a specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely. There is no better ally of success than positive and down-to-earth planning.

6. Choose the one new thing/subject that you will learn throughout the year.

There is evidence to suggest that adult learning have its most positive impact on self-esteem and self-efficacy. Human beings have a natural desire to learn and progress. Living with an open mind for learning new things, keep you younger, healthier and wiser and help you stay focused on progress, improvement, and development. Great leaders are lifelong learners. Growth is the choice of those that do not just embrace change but take a proactive decision to make the best of it.

7. Make the list of books you are going to read.

Time is unmistakably a limited resource. While books are finite too, the knowledge accumulated by humanity over centuries of history still does not fit into a lifetime. Considering that you will read an average of 5 books per year and living until 80 years old, your range of food for thought get reduced to a number of 4 hundred publications. Choose wisely and invest your time in a way that entertainment and development balance well one to each other.

8. Find one voluntary activity you will collaborate with.

Let’s start with the fact that volunteering is good per sei. But if you still need to be convinced you can quickly analyze the benefits of it for the strengthening of your leadership skills. While serving others, you better will get a clear perspective of the world, where there are people in need, and you are not the center of the universe. Being able to empathize and putting your talents altruistically at the service of society is a core for the nourishment of every positive leader. Additionally, you grow a network of other engaged beings and boost your self-confidence and teamwork and management skills.

9. Define a simple leadership strategy for those you are responsible at.

Great leaders care. They care about others, and they learn and rise by lifting others. Whether if your circle of influence is very big or very small, as a leader, you will always have other people dependent on you. Devoting time to analyze how can they also boost the best versions of themselves will not just work positively for them but help you to better shape the leader in you.

10. Plan your leisure breaks over the year in a meaningful way.

Filling your leisure time purposely is vital to ensure self-development and emotional, physical and material wellness. The difference between people and successful people is defined by the activities that they perform in their free time. Positive leaders chose to rest while growing. Plan your year accordingly and make sure to find the proper balance between you and the world.

Ready to rock your 2019?
