What does it mean to be brave? For many people, it can mean different things, but ultimately the formal definition of brave is, “having or showing mental or moral strength to face danger, fear or difficulty; having or showing courage.” Now the next question for you is, are you brave? Will you challenge yourself to move on and not let comfort and fear hold you back? Let those questions set in your mind for a second.
Fear breeds fear. Fear itself is, in fact, often a much greater evil than that which we actually fear. Science suggests that everything that we do as human beings is really about avoiding fear. We are afraid to be afraid. We tend to cling to what we have because we fear the unknown. The more scared we become, the more likely it is that our fears materialize in us. The main point: Nothing good ever came out of fear!
Are you tired of hearing the word fear, yet? Well, good because we’re really here to encourage bravery. My psychologist told me one day, “Take ownership and acknowledge what it is that you fear, or it will always own you.” You must dare to do things, even if you cannot foresee the future or consequences of what you do. Let me dig a bit deeper and give you examples on how to gain the courage to be brave and break free from fear.
“Deciding to be brave opens up way more possibilities than being perfect.” – Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
We need to talk more about courage and less about what holds us back because when our minds fixate on the negative, it’ll end up controlling our actions and beliefs.
Fear controls our actions and mindset, which set tremendous constraints that prevent us from living our lives to the fullest and from experiencing our true potential. One of the best ways to step out of your comfort zone and embrace bravery is to challenge yourself to do things that you’ve never done. Every year, give yourself some sort of significant physical or mental challenge to avoid getting “stuck.” Try all kinds of things like running races and engaging in other sports events of a somewhat extreme nature. You can even challenge yourself to learn a whole new language, traveling alone, bungee jump off bridges, climb up wind turbines or move and settle in new countries. All of these ideas may sound extremely crazy, but the point is to know that anything is possible if you believe in yourself and have courage. Only those who will risk going too far can find out how far one really can go.
Courage is just like a muscle that needs to be trained. Courage helps move you and us as a society closer towards bravery. You can sit and consider all of the consequences of over and over again; however, you have to believe that you’re able to handle the unexpected.
If you need to see things perfectly clear before you decide, you will never be able to make a decision or you will make it too late. Chances come and go, but they must be taken. Be brave on behalf of yourself and to be an inspiration for others to do the same. One must be brave to have those unpleasant conversations with friends and family members. Courage helps us to act against those who threaten, or who act in a wrong way. Choose to take a stand in your life right now and be brave.
